Hello,

I'm not sure if this is posted in the right category or not. I recently purchased a Burndy Y35 Hypress hydraulic compression tool from a retired electrician for $100. I knew I was getting a great deal and is probably one of the reasons that prompted me to buy it. The tool has some cosmetic wear, but seems to work well. There were several U dies that came with it. I have a few questions for those who are familiar with this tool or own one. This is my first purchase of a hydraulic crimper and not very familiar with them. There was no manual provided. I am confused on what dies to use on certain applications. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

1. Is the Y35 limited on certain applications compared to other 12 ton crimpers?

2. Can the Y35 crimp any terminations other crimpers can do?

3. Some of the dies have wire AWG printed on it and others just have index numbers on it. How do you know which index number corresponds to AWG?

4. What are BG dies? Are they used for C and H taps? Service drop connections?

5. What is the O die used for?

You stole that $1500 tool from that man, don't you feel bad? The burndy isn't two stage, but that isn't important. If you are in that big of a rush, just tighten the handle to the crimp. With the coming of battery tools, you may see more of these on the market, although not for $100.
the BG is the same thing as the nose die (or 5/8) in the kearny style hand crimps. The "O" dies are the same also. Some connectors are ok with 9000 lb, others need 12 tons.
The new dies for the Y35 will have "U" on them, such as U-O. Different manufacturers dies will interchange with the Y35.

Let me see if I can get you some more information...
