Is there a requirement for a emergency switch for a gas or oil burner outside of the room where the burner is installed, if so where can it be found?

You will find it as a requirement for oil appliances in 2006 NFPA 31 article 10.5.1. This requires a switch to be outside and adjacent to the room where the oil burner is.

you'll also notice the wording says "remote from". It does not say "at the top of the stairs", etc. I've seen quite a few building officials over the years try to get that switch located at the top of the stairs. Some homes, that red switch plate would show up pretty good at the top of the stairs in the living room. :D

No one ever puts an emergency switch for gas burners around here. They don't even require a fire-o-matic. Only a service switch on the side of the unit, not on a removable panel, of course.

In MA there is no requirement that I am aware of for gas burners.

The requirements for oil burners in MA is found in 527 CMR 4.04:(3) and (4).

Burner Emergency Switch

Thank all of you for the replies.

I don't think that it is required for gas burners either.

It is not, and nobody has ever been able to locate a code requiring it. However, by tradition many still install the remote switch and firomatic for gas fired boilers and furnaces anyway.

Watch out for local codes though. In RI any furnace or boiler is required to have a remote shutoff switch "subject to approval by the AHJ."
