314.29 Boxes, Conduit Bodies, and Handhole Enclosures to Be Accessible.

Boxes, conduit bodies, and handhole enclosures shall be installed so that the wiring contained in them can be rendered accessible without removing any part of the building or, in underground circuits, without excavating sidewalks, paving, earth, or other substance that is to be used to establish the finished grade.

Exception: Listed boxes and handhole enclosures shall be permitted where covered by gravel, light aggregate, or noncohesive granulated soil if their location is effectively identified and accessible for excavation.

?????????????

Go ahead Charlie, speak up! This thread quotes a rule that is acceptable. If you mean the ????? is why, I say it is because of the almighty dollar and the code making process related to the product manufacturer and their strong presence on the CMP's.

I also posted this to have the new kids be aware of this permission and to advise them that their comments may be incorrect sometimes.

PS: I am thinking about meeting with electrical industry people in the Boston area sometime in the near future to sit behind our computers and discuss the wealth of information we have found, and for some of the tricks discovered when "exporting" the NEC related documents.

Interested?

Can we use your school room?

I can use the MECA office too.

I believe this is directed at me.

Joe the "burial" in question was inside a wall. My mistake for not clarifying.

Actually worked for a company once that had me make about 6 open splices (no box) in a ceiling with no access .Told me make them good and tape them, the patch man is 15 minutes behind you. This same company was renting a license.

I think there is now a UL listed splice kit for NM. No more reason to do things like this.

This subject must pertain to a previous thread I missed. Can anyone enlighten me?

Sure.....you got a lot of time on your hands?

On second thought you missed nothing.

There was a thread about a buried box.

"High impact, clear cover is durable and allows complete inspection"

I don't believe this can be buried in a wall either, FWIW. Now can we move on?
lol

No, not that specific product.

Notice they never say you can conceal it.

If you could conceal it I think the packaging would scream it.

They do say you can use it in place of a box.

Never mind I found another one cheaper

HERE

That tap device I believe is covered by 334.40(B) (2002)

334.40(B) Devices of Insulating Material. Switch, outlet, and tap devices of insulating material shall be permitted to be used without boxes in exposed cable wiring and for rewiring in existing buildings where the cable is concealed and fished. Openings in such devices shall form a close fit around the outer covering of the cable, and the device shall fully enclose the part of the cable from which any part of the covering has been removed. Where connections to conductors are by binding-screw terminals, there shall be available as many terminals as conductors.

These have come up before and it seems as though I remember them not being allowed to be buried. It also seems as though they don't want to give out much information on on their website either
