Bushing on PVC Conduit

My thought would be PVC would not need a bushing on top of that since it it is con-conducting. And I would think the MA would provide the smooth round surface :)

300.4(F) states Insulated bushings. Abrasion, would be the key word. TA's and RNC sometimes do not provide that smooth flared surface inner surface for the conductors.

mike,

This is one of the questions that the Forum members havve a tuff time

agreeing on.

The key is bushing or adapter, is a box adapter the same adapter being

used in the NEC?? I don't know.

PVC would require a bushing as well.

Take a look at 352.46 this requires the use of a bushing or adapter for PVC.

Chris

Adapter is a vague term. Does a MA qualify? Also 352.46 suggests that we have to use a bushing or adapter for any size RNC conduit.

edit 342.46 & 344.46 also suggests the same. Well I guess it doesnt suggest, it requires. Its not limited to just #4AWG or larger.

352.46 says that if the conduit enters a fitting then it requires a bushing, unless the fitting provides equivalent protection. So the question is if a terminal adapter is a fitting then does it provide equivalent protection?

In all the xxx.46 for metal type raceways it says " ---a bushing shall ----" ,

And in all the xxx.46 for non-metalic type raceways it says" --- a bushing or

adapter shall be----".

How much is a plastic bushing, how long does it take to install, 10 cents and

10 seconds, Is it a good idea, sure, So that's not my point, What other kind

of adapter is there to take the place of a plastic bushing?? That would go

on the end of a non-metallic raceway entering a box etc.??
