What happens in your area? When the AHJ catches a tradesman with no license or operating license doing work?
Is any of this enforceable? How? Other than taking his license if he really has one.

I once got caught, in action, on a small job with no permit. They wrote me an $800 Municipal Court ticket. Same as my stack of moving violations. I went to trial & no one showed from the city so it got dismissed. My point or thought is, from the tradesmans point of view, whats the big deal?

In NJ, working w/o the proper credentials is a crime (class IV felony, if I recall correctly) and is fined

NJ has discovered that collecting on these fines (one was for a whopping $31,000) is a nice cash cow.

Here are two similar threads on Mike Holt from days gone by....

Celtic,

I see things in Jersey are changing fast, in april of this year we had a call from a homeowner, i need someone to finish a job, i asked why the other guy din't finish, it appears this guy was working unlicensed, what the homeowner did was stop by the AHJ and asked how he gets it inspected, the AHJ took his information, and the next thing this guy ends up in court, with heavy fines, and had to return the monies to the homeowner, the homeowner said he din't have the money to return, county lock up sure makes money appear, it's about time they enforce the laws.

I was told, the state is running a trainning session for law enforcement, on the contracting laws, it should get intresting.

I've turned in plenty of the people advertising illegally on craigslist.org. The enforcement people at the state are glad this is one of my hobbies. They send out cease-and-desist letters and manage to get most of the hacks to pull or change their ads. The stubborn ones are referred to the attorney general's office.

Violating the electrical laws here is a misdemeanor. I've heard from my contacts that the state is gearing up to increase enforcement. I, for one, welcome this. We'll never be able to get rid of all the hacks, but we can sure make it very difficult for them to find customers if we can get their ads pulled.
