Where would one find the ventilation requirements for a C1D1 location. The room is approx. 8000 SF with the equipment area less than 10% of the room area. NFPA 30 does not clearly indicate what ventilation requirements are needed for this space. I am trying to assist the safety personel at a local manufacturing facility find the ventilation standards and need some help. Thanks for any responces.

Check with the local fire department, the IFC has ventillation requriements for several different types of applications...may be yours is covered.

The other option would be a mechanical inspector, MSDS for the product or a mechanical engineers calcs...any other questions, pm me :)

Thanks Ken. Here is the problem, I am located in a small town where I am the inspector for all the trades. I am also the Assistant Fire Chief and the planning and zoning guy. Along with the variety of other duties, it makes it hard to stay on top of all the particulars of code enforcement. Thankfully there are locations like Mike Holt where I can go for assistance. I credit the company for wanting to do the right thing, and I am trying to help them meet any requirements under code provisions. It seems that each turn leads to another standard, most of which our community can not afford to purchase. I will keep searching and learning along the way.

Technically, if the whole area is classified Division 1 you don?t need any ventilation at all. Proper ventilation is used to reduce the classification to Division 2. It may only be a partial reduction at that. It cannot be reduced to unclassified with ventilation alone.

Since I don?t know the process involved, it?s a bit difficult to give a complete answer. You probably found in NFPA 30 that (1 cfm/ft2 of solid floor space) is the common standard for ?adequate ventilation. Unless the installation is covered specifically in one of the NFPA 30 Chapters, it is probably better to use a more general Standard, such as NFPA 497, to develop the classification. It uses 1 cfm/ft2 of solid floor space too. It also permits 6 air changes per hour.

I agree with Bob on that...with out knowing processes or anything else I would say the minimum requirement/s (depending on how you look at it) of 6 air changes per hour or 1 cfm/ft^2.

Also, look at Ch 27 (or whatever chapter you have in the IFC, I have the CFC) for air changes...
