I am installing a piece of equipment made in Germany. It has connecting cables that are flexable rubber insulated cables. These cables carry 480 V to motors and other equipment near the main machine.

My question is, does NEC demand that these cables be enclosed or in a protective conduit.

Currently these cables lay out from wire way on to the floor then to the final connection point.

I Europe this is OK but I do not know for sure if in the USA these cables need to have sealtight or other protective conduit to meed code requierments.

Please give me some direction.

Thanks in advance,

Keith

Re: cable armoring rules

I believe your installation will not need additional conduit for protection if the cord is suitable for the conditions of the work environment per 400.3 and Table 400.4 of the NEC. In fact, 400.8(6) does not permit it unless specifically stated in the respective code section. :)
