cable fault location

We have three phases to ground fault in 4000v cable. My question, how can I know the location of the fault because the cable more than 600m and I don?t want to excavate all this distance? Any way to know that by calculations or by new technology machine in the market?

Here is another site for a thumper locator. This piece of equipment also has VLF testing. It also $4500 less than what Mitchell list price is.

If it is a bolted short try to measure the DC resistance from both sides of the cable and calculate backwards the distnaces. You can get lucky.

There are zilions of tone generator and probs which you can rent.
