From my understanding cable shrouds are used to protect glands from corrosive atmospheres in which they may be installed.
If anyone knows of any other reason for using cable shrouds please advise.

dha, have you been hanging around Germans? =) The whole gland thing took me a while, along with the prints running the "wrong" way. Oh yea, and "climps", "cable climps"
I guess I always figured a "shroud" was to hold the "gland" in place, nothing more.

YES. But it also protect the technician from accidental, unintential contact on the gland metal where, in some cases, induced voltage can be existed on the armour due to unbalanced load, long run of single core armoured cable, harmonic effect, improper grounding/bonding ect.,
