Cable Pull

I have a job that requires 4-#3/O with 2 #6 inside a 4" conduit (box to box), then inside a 2-1/2" conduit box to panel. The total run is about 250' box to box, 40' box to panel but with at least 2 90s.

Will I be able to hand pull this or will I need a cable puller? Any cable puller recommendations?

You'll need a puller or about 8-12 guys . If your pulling by hand we normally measure and pull off what will need. Then have guys about every 15-20ft picking it up and feeding it in. The rest will be pulling at the other end. You may still need a pulley either way for 90 degree turns. . The pulling machine can pull it off the rolls.

That sounds like a pretty easy pull to me for 3 guys.

Did you make the pulling calculations to ensure no damage to the insulation?

Really? I think this guy needs advice derived from real world experience by electricians, not engineering busy work.

Without details of the pull its hard to say. Is this ug or 25' in the air. Lots of variables but with 4-6 good helpers it could probably be done by hand. With that being said I think I'd go with a tugger

...its a 250' run, use rented tugger, no need for pulling calculation on a run so short with 2-90's. JMO

You are right that more information would be needed. He doesn't even say if this is AL or CU conductors. I would assume copper but there is a lot of weight difference between AL and CU.

250 ft of 3/0 copper X 4 can get kind of heavy to feed for just one or two guys if it's rolled out. If it's on spools and set up right it's easier. Trying to feed overhead (say 25 ft ) or underground does make a difference.

One problem is if they don't know how to set up a pull properly it can make things much harder.

Haveing a good pull rope and knowing how to make up the head and how to use lube can also make a difference. Makeing sure the conduit is clean before starting the pull.

Can it be pulled by hand? They moved some really big rocks to build the pyramids and all by hand but they had lots of motivated labor. We used to pull those by hand all the time and I still feel it.

I don't know if I would try it with three guys unless I was useing a lift or backhoe to do the actual pulling. Back problems are more expensive than tuggers.

I do these types of calculations for individuals and engineering firms daily....you have not provided enough detail to even do an accurate pull calculation.

Ability to pull by hand depends on how many helpers there are, and how many are fat middle aged/older and how many are young and athletic. Couple college or NFL football players may not have too much troubles and still get it done faster then 10 people in my physical condition.

...... with a bunch of dead folks, broken rock, and broken equipment
