Cable-Satellite hookup

I have a customer with 2 TVs. He wants cable and satellite on both TVs. I have never done any satellite hookups and am not sure how to make this happen.

Both feeds are in the basement.

For starters I would think 2 rg6 from the basement to each TV location, then sat box to one TV input, cable to different TV input.

Is there a way to connect both to one input?

He only has one satellite receiver now. Where do I get another or does he need a satellite installer?

What about the bandwidth issue, how would it seperate in one input?
 
I don't know if anyone makes a multiplexer to do this (doubtful), I just run (at least) two lines to tv location, user can select input at the tv (cable, satellite, antenna, whatever)

Well, without knowing more details you could use a one-channel modulator to multiplex the satellite receiver's A/V out to a programmable channel. Click here for one such example.

The other detail that I'd need to know is if the satellite receiver is a two-tuner model. If it is, click here for an example connection diagram (disregard the second receiver and TVs connected to it). If it is only has one tuner, the customer will only be able to watch the same satellite channel on both TVs.

It would help even more to know the make/model of receiver...
 
installing cable for a dish reciever can be done without knowing what equipment is going to be used. You will need 3 RG6 cables. 2 for the dish 1 for cable plus a phone line for the dish reciever. If you know what dish equipment ther is going to be ( brand and what reciever) you may be able to "get by" with only 2 RG6 but still should have the phone.Your best bet would be to run the cables needed and have the dish company hook up the recievers. There can be a few "ins and outs"on dish recievers if its just not the basic.Is there a place on the dish to hook up the new reciever? Is a multiswitch involved. Do you need to diplex the signal?If you find out what the equipment will be we can help better.
 
Equipment manufacturer and type would be needed, but if you have analog cable you can plug it into the dish recievers antenna jack. Turn off the dish reciever and the cable signal feeds through to the tv. If single tuner dish reciever than you can dyplex the signal into single cable than dyplex out at tv. With dual tuners and multiple tvs, either indepedant or slave, things get a little more compicated. Not much though.


Edit: Missed your last question, he probably needs a sat installer. Depending on the service in your area, it may be absurdly cheaper and less frustrating, for your customer at least.

This is the way I would do this if this was my house, and this is only my opinion, but I would rough in 4 rg6, and 2 cat5e to each location, then i would have a cable box and a satellite box at each location, then I would use either hdmi or component from the set top boxes to the tv inputs, this way they can switch video inputs on the tv to view either satellite or catv...
 
820.100(A)(1) requires that you have an *insulated* ground
to the CATV.

You will also need supply a ground to the sattelite (green
not required by NEC).

you can run both signals down one rg6 w/ diplexer's @ each end unless it is the hi def that requires two cables coming off different lnb's. if it has a dvr that has separate 'viewing' and 'recording' inputs, you can put a switch past the diplexer. you cannot combine them into one input on the tv, but the sat receiver should have s-video or rca outs; run cable into the f-connector (unless there is a set-top box; some new tv's have an access card slot that takes the place of the cable box). as far as grounding the satellite, use a ground block at the service and then continue on. you don't run the ground wire to the dish itself.

--forgot to mention-- you can use a multi-switch from leviton, terk, etc. .(like a 3x4) as the combiner where the cable and sat come in, then put the diplexer @ the tv. check the listing of the switch you use to make sure it is compatible w/ your dish provider.

edit--- i just read my post again and i see the confusion i caused. i apologize. my intention was to say that a single wire need not be run by itself to the dish from the service. thanks for catching that!

if you scroll on down there is much more.even a digram of how to ground a dish.imo if there the cable from the dish doesnt contain a ground wire then you have to run one seperate.
