cable size

I'm about to install an underground 200 amp residential service. My question is what is the maximum length of cable that I can run I will be using #1/0 hot legs and a #2/0 ground leg. I have about a 250" run.

Re: cable size

It all depends on how much load will be on this 200 amp service and how much voltage drop you are willing to live with.

If we assume 160 amps of load (unlikely) and only 3% allowed voltage drop you would need 3/0 copper for this.

1/0 "Hots" with 2/0 neutral sounds backward.

Do you mean 2/0 "hots" and 1/0 neutral?

Also is you wire copper or aluminum?

For a 200 amp service you need 2/0 copper or 4/0 aluminum minimum even without voltage drop.

Re: cable size

Thanks guy's for your quick reply. I did however have a typing error. My hots should have read #4/0 not 1/0 so I will try it again and it is Aluminum cable.

Re: cable size

IMO your installation will be fine.

A 250' run one way at 240 volt with a 160 amp load on 4/0 Aluminum will result in 3.3% voltage drop.

If you think the load is greater than this you will need to go to 250kcmil.
