Cable slitter tool

I have multiple shielded and unshielded communication cables, 4 conductor #22 to #18, I install into a control cabinet. I needed to remove about 3' of sheathing on each cable.

Looking for a good tool to slit sheath. Something like this. Ideas or recommendations?

Take a look at a Jonard JIC-4366 Cable Sheath Stripper and Ring Tool.
It is easy to use and is easy on the individual conductor insulation.

Most cables I have dealt with recently have a string inside of them. Strip a bit of the sheath off and use the string to slit the sheath.

Rip it with the drain wire.

Kinda hard here, the drain wire is wrapped around the foil shield and signal conductors.

I use that cheesy Gardner Bendner cat V stripper that has the razor blade and the big hole you stick your finger in. Works great.

Your description was quite adequate. My link was just from a quick google search. I have not used the tool I posted.

I have the Paladin 1822 shown on that page. Don't know about the one featured on the page, but it might be the same. The blade can rotate 90? after making the circular cut and then be used to make a length wise cut. The length wise cut doesn't work too well but it does work. That's what I use for those kind of jobs anyhow. Other guys use the string that is usually inside the cable for that purpose. What the Paladin excels at is stripping SO cable for plugs etc. For a 3' strip, the string might work better.

Your description was quite adequate. My link was just from a quick google search. I have not used the tool I posted.

I got my second one at my local hardware store; it cost about six bucks. The first one I got free as part of a kit. Hurt me to shell out that much cash to replace it.

I use a Greenlee 45579 on Belden cables and have had good success once the depth is set.
