I am looking at using 777 MCM DLO cable on a project. One sales rep warned me that once you strip back the jacket the compressed fine strands "explode" making it almost impossible to terminate it using a compression lug. I assume if I get a lug such as the Ilsco type FE rated for 373MCM-1111MCM it should give me enough extra room to make it work. Does anyone have any expierance using DLO cable of this size? Thanks for the help.

The largest finely stranded DLO cable I have terminated was 333KCMIL. I believe we used Thomas and Betts Lugs. Check their website, they should have a column in their lug specs with the heading of finely stranded cable in which they even specify the number of strands in the conductor.

The largerst I have worked on was 535.4 and I had no trouble with the strands as long as you are careful removing the insulation. The connectors that are made for this type of cable have a flared end to make it easier to insert the fine strands without bending them back.

You could always try stripping only 1/4" or so, start the strands into the connector, and then strip more. Maybe do it twice or thrice if it helps.

I have specified and used a lot of DLO cable. My2-cents worth
1. Use either T&B or Burndy compression connectors made for the eaxact size cable you are terminating. As Don mentioned these are long barrel lugs that are flared to make them easily inserted.
2. Use specified hydrylic crimper.
3. Cut cable to length with band saw or ratcheted circular cutters. We call them Lobster Claws.
4. To strip the insulation, use a plumber's pipe cutter to score the insulation at the precise depth. The "C" clamp type used to cut copper pipe.
5. Lightly coat the conductors and inside of barrel with No-Ox.
6. Follow crimping instruction to the letter. If done properly the connector will never fail in-service.
