cable tie install

I have been running across a lot of jobs involving cables ties to secure and support romex and m/c cables. How the install is being done is the electricians are wrapping the romex or m/c cable and then hammering a nail through the cable tie to wood or concrete. Does this seem like a good installation to anyone?

Both NM cable and MC cable are permitted to be secured and supported with cable ties. The cable ties are require to be "listed and identified for securement and support".

They make Ty-raps (cable ties) with tabs that have holes in them specifically for that purpose. I would not allow an installation such as you describe.

Any damage to the cable tie (and putting a nain through it is major damage) weakens the cable tie and is not permitted by manufactures.and probably not NEC. If your going to do that use a seperate anchor or a tie with a head with a mounting hole. so this falls under misuse and poor workmanship for sure.

If you use a NM cable staple to hole a single cable to a wood stud or a staple into the wood to hold a cable tie with more than one NM cable what is the difference?

What you propose is fine your using a staple as an anchor. The key is are you damaging the cable tie like putting a nail or screw through it.

The way I read the post I figured they were using a cable tie similar to this...

My impression is exactly as the OP stated. Any way you look at it there's nothing good about it. Use the proper Ty-Rap if you are going to use them or another way to support the bundle.

The "listed and identified for securement and support" is a recent addition to the code.
This provision aside I would consider any means of securing cable would have been acceptable as long as it did not damage the cable. Are there any other issues to consider?

I put the NM staple in the stud, then put the cable ties through the staple and cable tie the NMs to the staple. Inspector has not said anything about that. Need to make it look nice though.
