Our client is trying to apply parts of article 300 to cable 392 Cable Tray.
The questions are:
1. "Does the NEC reconize cable tray asan approves receway that can be used for the transition of LV or HV cables from below grade to above grade"
2. "Does the NEC reconize cable tray with covers front and back as an enclosure that can be used for transition of LV or MV cable from below grade to above grade."
My answer to both questions is no the NEC does not reconize cable tray and a approverd raceway or a enclosure. "Cable trays are a mechanical support systems. Cable trays are not raceways" 2005 NEC Handbook Artile 392.1 Scope.
Our client is trying to apply article 300.5 (D) (1) which states "Direct-buried cables emerging from grade and specified in columns 1 and 4 table 300.5 shell be protected by enclosures or receways extrnding from the minimum cover distenance below grade required by 300.5(A) to a point at least 2.5m(8ft) above finish grade."
Article 300 Wiring Methods does not apply as Section 300.1 (A) states "unless modified by other articles" Article 392 does modifie article 300
Article 392.3(A) wiring methods which is therfore stand alone.
We plan to Transition from underground to cable tray within 18" of the ground.
Any comment.
