Cable tray Conductor fill

When calculating cable fill inside of a cable tray, is it common practice to take the overall dimension of the cable you are installing or do you rely on manufacture data? Single conductors are a breeze, but when installing a cable of multiple conductors, I cant find anything in the code as far as square area goes? Thanks for your help.
