I am clear on sizing cable tray width per NEC section 392 but I'm not sure about how deep to specify it.
The manufacturers make them in various depths.. 4", 6" etc.

Any recommendations on choosing the depth?

Thanks

The depth increases the load carrying capacity. All the strength in a tray is in the sidewalls.Taller walls means longer spans between supports. With splice plates I’ve gone 40 feet unsupported in a special case.

Word of warning: if you follow this method your trays will shake a lot on windy days but won’t fail. Add 2” (next size up). It’s cheap and they won’t shake.

Another thing not in the standards: but and use the pitched roof covers if you have problems with dirt and debris. Or else go very heavy.
