Cable tray sizing

We are on a project in NYS where cable tray is the wiring support method (we still use the 1999 code here until the state legislature gets enlightened.)the question is how do the provisions of 318-9(a)(3) and 318-11(a)(3) work together? -9 implies that we are concerned about total cross sectional area for calculating fill, whereas in -11 we are now talking about spacing the cables (1) cable diameter in a single layer to avoid derating (and how much do we derate if the cables are not spaced (1) cable diameter?). Anyone out there got a handle on this issue?

Re: Cable tray sizing

Hey daddio!!!

If you cannot maintain the spacing, you may need an engineer to help you make the calculation.

BTW: NYS will start referencing the 2005 NEC January 1, 2006. The residential portion of the NYS code will most likely be enforced in May or June, as soon as the Residential Code is published/printed.
So for other than residential work, you will be referencing the 2005 NEC in 31 days!!!

If you should have any questions in this regard, PM me.
