I have a job where the engineer wants to reroute feeders from underground in PVC to above ground in covered cable tray. He wants it covered so snow doesn't build up on the wires.

We already have the wire, 500kcmil THHN/THWN. The manufacturer cut sheet say the wire is sunlight resistant.

This is a 1200 amp and 800 amp feeder.

Is there a rating for wire that gets installed in cable tray?
I tried to search the NEC but couldn't find it.

Is it an industrial establishment?

Look at 392.10(B)(1)

The single conductor would have to say "for CT use" or similar

Yes, it is a large industrial complex, but on a solar farm the feeds into their power plant.
They can't dig because of the contaminated soil that is capped with blacktop.

It looks like we can use the THWN as long as it is rated for CT use. I will have to get confirmation.

I believe your 500's will have to be rated as single conductor cables and qualify under 392.10(A).

The reason I say that is because under 392.10(B), item (2) therein requires cables be rated as "Type MV".

I wonder how an AHJ decides if it is an industrial establishment. I wouldn't consider a solar farm to be an industrial establishment, maybe near a industrial establishment, but not one itself.

I see now that how I worded my statement it looks like a solar farm as an industrial establishments.
This is a large plant with a new solar farm, not the other way around.

It is one of their power sources along with their generators. They generate much of their own power from the plant steam along with the utility power.

I don't think there is any doubt that this is an industrial establishment.

Single conductors would fall under 392.10(B)(1)(a).
I have confirmed the conductors are CT rated so I think this would be compliant.

Sounds good.

I misread 392.10(B) earlier. I read it as the installation must be compliant with both (1) and (2). That is not the case.
