Cable with "D" suffix

What does the indication from Table 400.4 for cables with a suffix "D" [at the end] of the 'Type Letter' column? There are only three locations/cables where this is indicted - HPD, PD and SRD.

From NFPA, 70-1968 Conductors for General Wiring 310.1

"The letter D used as a suffix indicates a twin wire with two insulated conductors twisted together under an outer non-metallic covering."


It appears to have been something under consideration, but never explained in the NEC codes? Does anyone know what its actual use is - other than a question to stump an unsuspecting attendee on a journeyman exam.
