I have an architect who would like to hang a curtain from the bottom of a cabletray in a TV Studio. Not a good idea in IMHO but I reviewed NEC Art 392 quickly and can not find anything that prohibits this.

Anybody know of a statement in the NEC that prohibits hanging non-electrical equipment from cabletray?

Does this help you out.

National Electrical Code 300-11 Securing and Supporting (b) Raceways Used as Means of Support states: ? Raceways shall not be used as a means of support for other raceways, cables, or non-electrical equipment.?

In general, cable tray is not a raceway; it is a cable support system. See the definition of raceway in Art 100.

You might try http://www.nema.org/stds/ve2.cfm#download, to down load a copy of the installation guidelines. That being said I would non accept cable tray as a cable support if non electrical equipment (not covered in 392.6) was additionally supported by the system with out a letter from the tray systems manufacture and quite possibly an engineering report testifing to the adaquacy of the support system overall for the additional load.
