Calculating neutral load

Hi, i was making a residential load calculation from the NEC handbook annex examples, and they include 240V loads for the neutral load calculation, i thought that only 120V-N loads determine the current magnitude on the neutral conductor, however i always think that the best way of size it is with the worst case scenario which is a complete unbalanced load on the 120V buses, making the neutral the same size as the 120V conductors, but i want to understand well this approach by the NEC, thank you.
 
220.61 determines the neutral load.

Yes it is the maximum imbalance that could occur.

What Annex D example were you looking at?

Certain loads such as ranges, dryers, some HVAC equipment, and such are not always straight 240V loads, but have a neutral and are 120/240V loads and must be considered in the calculation.

Example D1, they include the Range and the Dryer, is that because some features such electronics need the 120V?
