Calculation of Area for Multiconductor Cable

OK, I'm sure this an easy question, but I have to ask just to be sure.

How is the cross sectional area of a multiconductor cable calculated per NEC? Do you simply take the cross-sectional area, given in the Chapter 9 tables, and add them together? Also, what type (THHN, THWN, ect.) of wire is typically used for multiconductor cable?

I am trying to calculate the fill area for multiconductor cabling in a ladder type cable tray. Any help is appreciated.

You need the actual OD of the cable that is going to be used. You can get that from the manufacturer's website.

Along with Don's post, you can also measure it, see note (9) of the notes to the tables in chapter 9 in the NEC.

As far as conductor types in the cable assemblies, if they are not identified / marked as outlined in 310.11, the cable type ampacity in the perspective cable article applies, and in most cable assemblies the individual conductors are not identified.
