Hello, I have a pretty simply question. When I calculate the wire size for a 5 hp motor using the calculators on the electrician2.com site it tells me to use an 8 AWG conductor in 2 different calculators. I am okay with these calculations.

Now, the wiring diagram from the manufacturer of the equipment specifies 10 AWG.

I also know that I can use the 8 AWG regardless but would it still be right to use the 10 AWG because the manufacturer specifies it?

motor

motor

Is it a "true" 5 HP motor with nameplate so marked, or a "special" 5 HP like an air comperssor motor rating ?

Not sure of the voltage of your motor but Table 430.248 calls for 28 amps on a 5 HP motor at 230 volts. I assume 125% and we get 35 amps.

Table 310.16 says #10 thhn 75C column is good for 35 amps.

It on a table saw and I believe that it is a Baldor 5 hp . That is all I know right now as I do not have the nameplate and am going by 28A.

Did this table saw come with a plug on it?

If so I would simply match the circuit to the factory installed plug.

You really can not do anything else.

Sorry I was posting while you where posting. It is 230V. The Motor Circuit Protection Tables states that, agreed, 35A is optimal for protection and a minumum of 10 AWG provided they do not have equipment termination rated for 60C.

Why would the calculators be calculating a larger wire? I know it is probably not your calculator.
The saw is not here yet I am trying to do some prep work so I will follow the mfg recommendations.
I do appreciate and thank you for your responses.
Have a wonderful day.

I can only guess that the online calculator does not take into consideration the asteriks in Table 310.16 which would allow #10 in some situation on a 35amp breaker
