We are considerring a move out west to the San Francisco area. I am currently Hold a Master EC certification in the State of FL. From what I understand this will only allow me to sit for an exam out there. My question is first of all how many and what type or class of certifications are there in the State of California? And if I want to become a contractor and qualify my own business again is there a certain class or certification I must have? It seems everyone including the workers must have some type of certification. Also is it possible to get a qualifyer for you business out there the way they do here in FL?

In Ca we have Licensed EC C-10 contractor. administered by the state contractors board www.cslb.ca.gov 4 years in the trade.

then we have the employee of the C-10 apprentice level then journeyman administerd by the Dept of industrial relations

Well if you want o be a contractor you should be able to take the test. With the C-10 electrical license you are the owner or qualified individual you can contract and work in the field. However you cannot work for another C-10 contractor ( unless you are the qualifier) in the field unless you pass the journeymans test. In otherwords a regular employee. Note that a general contractor can do his own electrical and you could work for him with no certifications at all.
