California Disability Elective Coverage

So after about a year and a half of paying taxes, insurance premiums, bonds, license fees, more taxes and forced to purchase public notices in the newspaper I am finally ready to protect and insure....myself. How selfish of me. Low and behold the state of California has elective short term disability coverage for independent contractors. Despite the fact I dont hold any government entity in a very high regard it would sure make things quick and easy to just sign up with them. Do any of you guys have short term disability through EDD? Is 3% a good rate for a non scam policy?

I pay about 1% for an elective policy thru my employer that covers both short and long term disability. I have the max coverage. I am 54 YO. I don't know if that helps you any.

In California and there is already a mandated disability program for employees but currently I don t have an employer. Stuck to purchase on my own.
