The California Legislature passed Senate Bill 49 (SB 49, Skinner, Chapter 697, Statutes of 2019), which gave the CEC a new authority to develop “standards for appliances that facilitate the deployment of flexible demand technologies” to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from electricity generation.2 Adding flexible demand technologies to an appliance will allow it to schedule, shift, or curtail the electrical demand. SB 49 requires consumers’ consent to enable this functionality.

Unknowing people where I live, purchase discount thermostats from the local utility, which by the nature of the discount, allow the utility to control the temperature in the home during high demand days via wifi / internet control.
