Does anyone from CA know if the state plans to adopt the 2008 code next year? I know that the electrician test is still based on the 2002 edition, and that we currently use the 2005 edition (when it is enforced that is). Thanks.

Yes, with an effective date of 1-1-2011. See the California Building Standards 2009 Annual Code Adoption Cycle. (California - the Progressive State; on the cutting edge of proven technology)
Last time they cut it close like that they skipped an NEC cycle at the last minute... (93 - 99 - 02 - 05)

Not to get off track, but remember that we did adopt the new energy code January 1.
UC Davis students under the direct control of manufacturers should not be allowed to write building codes... I'll leave it at that...

With the code changes, and making everything safe for everyone... a subpanel upgrade is going to cost upwards of $4000 around here when we have to adopt the stupid codes in the newer versions.

It seems pretty clear to me that the State agencies are pretty much committed to the 2008 NEC being the basis for 2010 California Electrical Code; otherwise, it takes a direct Act of the legislature (with all the required public hearings and such) to adopt the 2011 edition.

Or re-doing the same process they have already completed - but if I remember right - the State Fire Marshall asked why we were adopting the 05 when the 08 was released last time - and some many lengthy and late debates on 96 had us skip to the 99...

Personally I had hoped they would skip the 08, or leave out huge portions of it.... AFCI's specifically - I do not see it as necessary.
