California -- Title 24 lighting

I have a 3000 sq. ft. commercial space that will be used for exercise. This space has over 100 linear feet of windows and they would like to install display lighting for these windows.

Under the 'area category' method, can I trade off unused general illumination allowances to the show windows?

Under the 'tailored method' and Table 146-G I apparently would get 0 watts special allowance for display lighting in an exercise center.

What trade offs are available, if any?
 
I would think that you would have a hard time selling that as show window when it's for exercise.

If you are only using it for exercise why would you need to be so close on the lighting that you needed trade offs?

In an exercise center you are allowed 1.0 w/sqft under the area category method. Under the Tailored Method you are not allowed any special lighting power allowances.

You might be able to pick up some credits using multi level occupant sensors or automatic dimming systems, but I haven't looked hard enough to know for sure.

Thanks for answering. I'm not sure I understand this question.

They want display lighting along the perimeter windows (I think) to show what type of stuff they do. There are no plans as yet. They want a figure to take to get a bank loan -- they say. I'm just going to throw everything in but the kitchen sink. I've worked with these people a lot so I kind of have to give them something.

 
Well you were looking for trade offs. From what I can see you would be alllowed 3000 watts of lighting right now. If you are only installing 2000 watts of lighting then you still have 1000 watts that you can use however you want.

Cool. I think this is the first bit of positive information I've ever gotten after asking a question about title 24.

Here is the hotline number for the Energy Commission. 800-772-3300. Their hours are 8-12 & 1-3 and they are closed the first three Fridays of the mongh because of furlough time.

They are usually very helpful.
