Can a split-panel "sub-panel" be used off-grid while following code?

I want to take all my 120v off-grid solar without any back feeding or grid connection. I have a split panel setup on my early '80s house which would allow this but I live in city limits so I need to get an electrician to pull electrical permits for my solar. So ultimately the question is - can I use my existing panel or do I need to do a completely physically separate sub-panel to follow code?
