can a surface mount transfer switch be installed semi flush

I recently roughed a new home in. The owner supplied me with a generator and transfer switch.
The transfer switch is a commercial switch that was used. It has know room to knock holes out in the back
of it. It has pre cut knock outs in the side. I recessed it enough in the garage, so I can get the feeds into the pre cut
knock outs behind drywall. Is there anything in the code that says it cant be recessed because its a surface mount switch?
Im having trouble finding it. Thanks for help

As long as the doors open properly I know of no code that would prohibit it.

I must admit it wouldn't even have occurred to me to check. I'd have just done it. I've done it indoors on occasion.
