mfg's are a good place to start

Mfg's like Channelvision and Channel Plus are a good place to start. Their websites and technical publications have lot of this info. They also provide free layout services for larger jobs, even including drawings.

An RF meter is a handy tool.

One of the best tips is to ensure that you install a large enough distribution enclosure to contain not only the splitters, amplifiers, and modulators, but also to provide proper bend radius for the RG6. We're usually running at least 2x RG6 quad shield and 2x Cat5e or Cat6 [based on customer preference] to each TV drop. HDMI baluns [for running HDMI on Cat5e or Cat6] use up two cables for a single run.

Siamese wire is a great time saver and helps with in-wall wire management.

We use Bix terminations for tel.

As far as anything cable related, I would suggest that you only concern yourself with running the home runs from each jack location. Anything beyond that like splitters and especially structured media panel equipment that you install will be removed by the cable company.

If you want to increase you knowledge of cable installation that's fine, but just understand that it's not your job to provide anything more than the RG-6 installation.
