Can I look to a newer code for guidence?

My county uses NEC2009 I was unclear on how to treat the disposal and dishwasher. I did a search for guidance and it brought me to this board. MastertheNEC posted a reference to NEC2014 that was much clearer. Can I use a more current code, or am I limited to the NEC2009?

First of all, there is no "NEC 2009." It is published every 3 years, including 2005, 2008, 2011, and (yes) 2014.
