Can I upgrade a feed without replacing the panel?

I was contacted to install new circuit in a garage but found that someone fed the 60A sub panel in the garage with 12/2. This allowed them to run a few circuits but blew the panel all the time just from running tools. Could I just feed 6 AWG to give them full panel capability and be able to wire in the circuit they want without updating the panel?

If the panel is in good shape there is no reason why you cannot leave it. Truth is new panels of this type are pretty cheap, it's the breakers and wire that can be expensive.

I don't see why you can't.

I would be running 6/3 with ground though. Consider whatever size aluminum conductors have adequate ampacity to save money.

And if it is detached you need a GES bonded to the EGC.

If you are going to mess with it, you have to make it right.
