Details: NEC 430.22(G) (2) This suggests that for the wiring from the VFD to the motor, with a smaller motor 1-2hp can be 16 awg. Is there any way to use 16 AWG wiring from the motor to the disconnect? Thanks very much.
If it is not premises wiring but rather part of some other assembly, maybe. Might depend on what standards you must follow for building that assembly though, default kind of sort of becomes NEC if you don't come up with something else that applies to you and/or you are qualified to use.
I agree for a skid system then 16 AWG is OK. For field installation, most facilities and contractors don't have 16 AWG, its small and easy to damage. Just go with 12 AWG. If you spec 16 it may be more expensive as its not on hand

Depending on the VFD, 12awg may not fit in the terminals on a drive that small. If 12awg is required, you will likely have to transition to it through terminal blocks. Larger wire may also lead to space issues in the peckerhead.
