Can Light retrofit + adding lights

I have a homeowner who wants to "modernize" her recessed can lights in her kitchen, and also add one light.

Do they make a retrofit kit that would also have a matching "canless" cut-in light?

And regarding the LED retrofit kits, who makes the best one? Do any of them remain recessed like the original light? the ones I see end up with light basically at the surface.

Thanks

Just get LED trims that fit whatever size housing is currently there. Cut the same size additional housing in where she wants to add the light.

I recommend Halo or Nora for LED trims.

Some lights can only go into cans, but some disc lights are designed to used in cans as well as surface mounted over junction box. Once installed, they'll look the same from the outside. That's probably what you want to do. If you get the all the same ones that be used in cans or surface, you'll be able to have them all be the same.

If you can’t swap them all out for wafers, I’d get trims for the existing, and a matching trim with remodel can for the new one.

Halo makes many trims that fit on both remodel and new work cans. But I rarely install cans anymore, wafers are the way to go.

I personally can't stand the look of "wafer" lights. They look extremely cheap. Well......I guess they are.

They look like lighting installed in RV's or manufacture housing.

I agree with this. They just look too plain and flat for me.

I do like that they are edge lit for low ceilings, such as basements

Wafers vs Cans seems to be a very polarizing topic. I personally started off strong on wafers but would like to move toward higher end more traditional recessed lighting
I think I'm starting to go that way as well. Wafers are cool because you can install in place of an existing light. You can rough them in with a standard ceiling box. But a traditional can has the advantage of being able to replace the lamp and trim easily. The problem with cans, is that they still suck to install.
