can NM cable be ran EXPOSED in a enclosed patio

I've just built a nice patio outside my back door. big beams with t&G. Covered it with a nice tile roof. Added 3 ceiling fans and nice lighting hate the look of sch 40 or conduit. would rather not run flex either. the best look is just NM (romex). Been trying to make out the codes. not sure!! can I or can't I?
