Can NM staples(metal romex staples) be used on bell wire?

Hi, the residential electrician I work with was telling me that the NM staples I was using on 4 conductor bell wire was not legal. But I could not see any reason why it would not be legal since we do it ALL the time.

I would assume an AHJ would say something but they never do...

If there is a reference in the code to this could somebody please let me know. If the brand and type of staple is needed to answer the question all I can remebmer about them is that they are a standard metal staples that come in a red bucket and can fit nicely on 12 10 and 14 wire.

Staple guns are fine and fast- until you put one through the wire which is real easy to do and often goes unnoticed. Do that during the rough and you won't find it until its too late.

I like insulated NM staples. Not much chance of damaging the wire unless you are an animal with the hammer.

Low voltage wiring, for the most part, is not subject to Chapter 3 so don't expect to see any LV wires listed on the box of staples. The NEC only says that LV wiring needs to be fastened or supported, not how.

Railroad spikes work well also.

Romex Staples are fine. This info would not be found in the NEC. The nec just wants cables secured in place. Art. 300.11.

That being said it is much easier to penetrate the jacket and the wiring with RX staples. Insulated ones are safer but if you just snug up the romex staples there is no problem. I use a staple gun with rounded staples--- I have used RX connectors at times.

All of the existing LV wiring in my house was fastened with roofing nails. Run about 5' bang in the nail, wrap the wire one turn around the nail, onto the next one. Stuff is still there 45 years later.

I personally use a T25 and a T18 staple gun...
