I lost my op so i 'll try it again . Came across a 500a cb in a mcc feeding a vfd and a soft starter. Wiring left the mcc on the ground [ 2" cement pad] to the vfd/ss then to two100hp. Wires are covered up with a metal cover bolted to the wall. I asked the guy who i was working with who is my boss on this job and did not get a good answer.
I am wondering how work got by and approved. Could this pass an electrical inspection ?

about 25' between mcc and vfd / ss
 
I'm not understanding the description of the installation, or what it is that you're questioning.

are you questioning that it needs a disconnect within sight? ( about 25' between mcc and vfd/ss )

...that the raceway is no good? (wires are covered up with a metal cover bolted to the wall)

I don't understand what the phrase " wiring left the mcc on the ground [2" cement pad] " means.

I'll betcha if you clarify a little, somebody knowledgeable will give you a good answer.

Ok. two 100hp motors are controlled, 1 by a soft starter 1 a by vfd . Both are fed from a 500a molded case circuit breaker in a mcc. Wires from a 500a circuit breaker leave the mcc on the cement pad without being in a conduit or trough , open on floor the only protection is a metal cover bolted to the wall at floor level . This hides the installation untill the cover is removed. I think there is a egc. The pad is about 25' long, meaning wiring is on floor for that lenght.


My question is would this be exceptable installation as far as in the nec?

If the wiring is 'open', that is, the insulation of the wires laying on the concrete, it would not be a recognized wiring method, and thus a violation.

If the wiring is a cable (MI, MC, etc), maybe ok.

In general I would question this as meeting code. Just out of curiosity what kind of wire is it and what size? Are you suggesting both devices are fed from the same CB?
 
I have seen this at a building where the wires were the feeds from a Pad mount trans. The conductors left the pad on the surface then through a cut -out in the bottom of the door, across the floor into the MSB 1600 a 480v . This was a temp-in due to a trans failure, the wiring lasted for 5 years at least.
 
Bob, yes both r fed from same breaker with single conductor wire. Maybe a bfd type wire. Like a thun
Thhn wire.
