I know it is common to have a shunt trip on the main feed to an electrical panel that is tripped by an EFSO system. Is it acceptable to install a relay in place of the shunt trip so that the panel is de-energized in an active emergency event but would be automatically reset once the system it cleared without having to manually reset the shunt trip?

Do you really want to do that? If a shunt trip is activated, depending on the nature of the loads, are you sure that everything will be in a safe restart condition? I'd hate to have someone trying to wiggle something out of a press, for instance, when the ram suddenly gets activated because it hadn't been cycled down normally.

The EFSO triggers are maintained contact push buttons, set off horns and strobes to alert anyone in the area. Once the trouble is investigated the push button would be reset. This panel primarily feeds lights with the hazardous containment areas and fuel pumps that have safely protocols in the control logic that would be reset when power is lost so they would have to be manually restarted anyway.

I did a bunch of compressed NG dispensers that used a relay as the EFSO. I don't see any real problem with it. It had to be manually reset just like a breaker would be and is just as reliable.
