a while ago someone posted something about a elevator pit sump pump outlet having to be pluged into a gfci outlet unless its a single outlet. can anyone point me to that article or post. i cant find anything in a search.

Single receptacle for a single load means someone won't unplug the cord. Having a duplex means there's an open, usable receptacle for someone to plug in something else..... and that's usually something plugged in temporarily (for like a drill or saw, etc.). So that type of use needs GFCI protection.
