Generally, wouldn't any AC capacitor with the right microfarads rated for at least as much voltage work?

Perhaps some kind mod could make it "capacitor" 'cos that's that's what I'm looking for.

Not really. These are capacitors rated for SCR commutation duty. Very high current pulses repeated at a few 100Hz
