Does a car charger need to be on a GFCI breaker if on the 2017 code and can #2 SER be used instead of copper? Charger needs 80 amps.

I don't believe GFCI is required under '17 but #2 Al at 90 amps would not be sufficient due to the requirement that the load be considered continuous + most chargers call for Cu termination.,.

If it’s the Ford Charge Station Pro, the terminals are copper-only.
It is a Ford Charging Station for the F150 Lighting truck. I'm going to get the owners manual from the customer to see what they recommend. He's the one that told me it needs 80 amps but I'll look to make sure.

Ok, so looks like I need a #3 SER cu for the full 100 amps.

Yes, the official name is “Charge Station Pro”. Definitely copper wire only.

Although this is for Los Angeles County, this might help.

You could use #2 aluminum for the run if you spliced it to #3 cu in separate boxes at both the breaker and the charger ends. See 210.19(A)(1) exception 2. But probably not worth it except for a very long run.

210.20 still requires a 100A breaker. And as the 75C ampacity of the #2 Al is 90A, which is a standard breaker size, that would violate 240.4.

In other words, that exception is only useful to allow the application of 240.4(B), which 210.19(A)(1) would otherwise preclude.

Cheers, Wayne
