I am bidding on a job for a car dealer. The NEC does not cover the canopy light area requirements that I can find. I have over 10000 sq ft to light up. The canopy is going over two major areas to protect the cars from hail and sun damage. I also have looked for parking lot areas and do not find an answer. This canopy is open on all four sides.

Re: Car Lot Canopy

There is no requirement for light per sq.ft. under the canopy. This is something your engineer, architect & building owner should decide. I was once given a chicken scratch plan of a bakery tenant finish. There was no electrical drawings on the plan. The GC said to wire it to code. I ended up having to fish wires down walls after the bakery people saw that no outlets were installed. Good luck. Ron

If you're forced to "go with the flow", I'd load the circuits in such a way that you can double the initial installation if the owner decides that it's not enough light. And wire it with expansion in mind.

Good luck! :)
