Car Wash Equipment Loads - Demand

For a car wash, not all motors are running at the same time. In the code, is there any reference on how to apply demand factors for a car wash? If not, knowing that a car wash is only used at the most 6-8 months a year depending on climate and all motors are not used at the same time, how does one determine how to size the electrical service for this usage?

I do not believe the code allows any demand factors for car washes specifically. You may be able to apply 220.21 if you are confident multiple motor loads will not be used at the same time.

I personally would not take the chance of sizing the service smaller than the connected load.

Re: Car Wash Equipment Loads - Demand

The primary applicable section is 430.26.

The 6-8 months per year is pretty much irrelevant; conductor heat loading is, for the most part, a short term (3-hour or less) phenomenon.

I concur with Bryan; I would be very reluctant to size service/feeder conductors for less than the connected load. While they may not operate simultaneously, that's probably because they start often. Frequent starting creates a tremendous heating demand.

I agree with Byran and Bob as far as 220.21.

I do not see how 430.26 can be used for service sizing even if it makes sense. ;)

You get to 430.26 through 220.14 which is included in Part II, Feeders and Services ;)
