CAREER ADVICE

Hello Everyone

I was just wondering if anyone could assist me. I am an Electrical Engineer by profession. The company that I work for is good but I feel that I am not doing justice to my profession. There are other people who joined the same time as I did but they have good experience than me only because they got to work on a variety of projects, something that didn’t happen in my case.
Now I don’t want to sit back and relax hoping that once in a blue moon light I will get a good project to work on. I really want to be PROACTIVE. So I would highly appreciate if anyone could assist me in this matter. Advise me what journals to read, what online websites to go through etc etc. any help would be highly appreciated.

Thanks

You will do the electrical world a big service if you will just remove all obsolete material requirements from your future specifications. Powdered soapstone is not a commonly available item, and neither is Challenger....

yeah, as mgookin said, what are you doing exactly?

if "engineering" was the draw, then perhaps you just in wrong area of engineering?

I think a lot of jobs/professions have their mundane parts that outweigh the exciting innovative opportunities.
What sort of company are you working for?
Standard products, systems, technical support, residential, commercial, industrial, public sector.............

Find a mentor within the company who works on projects that are different from the ones you work on and get him to help you widen your base. Look for internal postings in other departments that are more interesting to you. Look for opportunities in different companies. If you don't like where you are, change it.

Thanks for your reply

I am currently working for an Engineering Consultancy that main deals with refinery oriented projects along with EPC. its not that I don't like my company but the things is that I am sick and tired of doing the same work over and over. The main goal of the company is to keep the client happy and for that they need to get the work done. On very few occasions have I received an opportunity to work on a different project but other than that its same stuff over and over even if it means that I am working for a different client. I find myself doing the same stuff for different clients.
I just want to try something different of my own rather than relying on new projects even if it means that I have to take courses online, study journals. My interest is mainly towards power distribution. but in my company we don't do it very often.
And given the circumstances I cant switch the company because my degree is not ABET accredited as lot of companies need ABET certification. but I am working my way towards ABET certification as I have taken courses for that and I am about to complete those courses and have NCEES evaluate my degree.

I hope your evaluation goes well and you get a positive result.
Maybe you can then move from a consultancy company and get into design. That might be more rewarding for you.

It is not all that unusual for a person to get in a rut at a particular company.

Might be you either have to actively seek out something a little different to do where you are at or move elsewhere.

Which he says he can't until he gets his accreditation.
