Category OWHX Surge Arrestors

UL is planning to eliminate the OWHX category in September 09. These devices will be re-categorized under VZCA.

We are currently using OWHX devices in our 508A panels. Does anyone have the inside scoop on what changes UL will make to 508A? Table SA1.1 does not speak to VZCA, which I would take to mean that if you want to use a surge arrestor it will have to be procedure described????

The revision to UL 1449 will replace both XUHT and OWHX with VZCA. New testing is required for XUHT/OWHX device manufacturers to make this change, but there should be no reason to do anything to 508A except update 36.3.1. and 47.1.1 with "UL 1449, "Surge Protective Devices," and 36.3.2 (strike everything after "ANSI/IEEE..." and replace with "UL 1449 , Surge Protective Devices.") VZCA does not take effect until Sept. 29, so you may not get any kind of change notice until July or August.(?)

Thanks for the reply geerhed.

The response I got from UL was that they were aware of the situation, that some clarification was in order, but that it was up to the standards panel and nothing has been finalized.
