What size of down conductors are required for a catenary system which is being used at an Army temporay ammunition holding area. In the Army Amminition and Explosives Safety Standards (12/15/99)it states that the overhead wire is to be a continuous run of not less than 1/0 AWG. In the DOE M440.1-1, Rev.3 (6/16/04)it states that each run shall be a minimum of 0.25 inch in diameter and bonded to all down conductors. I can find no information in either manual mentioning the actual down conductor size.

Thank You,

Re: Catenary Grounding

I think this may possibly be a NESC issue and not an NEC issue. I don't believe there is any reference or specifications for catenary systems.

I think a catenary is the system of overhead wires for electric rail systems.

Re: Catenary Grounding

catenary
noun
the curve theoretically assumed by a perfectly flexible and inextensible cord of uniform density and cross section hanging freely from two fixed points

The curve formed by a rope or chain of uniform density and perfect flexibility, hanging freely between two points of suspension, not in the same vertical line.

It is often used to describe the trolley overhead power system, but in this case it is a cable strung between two supports to provide lighting protection to the buildings or objects below the cable.

Re: Catenary Grounding

A cable suspended under its own weight will take on the shape of a curve known as a ?hyperbolic cosine.? The shape is commonly called a catenary.
