I have a question regarding a video camera installation in a cattle barn that I am working on. What I am trying to figure out is if the installation is considered a Class II Division 2 installation.

Article 820 is a stand alone article, and 820.3 does not specifically reference article 500 or 547 (Agricultural Buildings). So, does this mean these sections do not apply and therefore the location is not subject to Chapter 5 rules?

On the other hand.. Article 547 would seem to classify the area as a Class II Division 2 hazardous location. (547.1(A) & 547.5(A))

So.... which one takes priority?

Areas in the cattle barn are not hazardous when defined by 547.1(A).

They are considered corrosive.

547.5(A) tells you what type of wiring system is suitable for the corrosive location.

Excessive dust in the case of Agricultural Buildings is not the same as in Class II areas of Article 502. The dust in Ag buildings is to damp. Feed products are generally of higher moisture content than what is used in the storage of grain.

There may very well be a Class II area on a farm but most likely only in the area where stored grain is being ground before being mixed with feed additves.

There would be no reason for Class II unless you're storing or handling some dusting product.

There maybe a reason to consider Class I, depends on how much methane is expected out of the cattle's business end ........

i have not seen a barn yet that does not have dust covering the tops of the
ceiling studs or any thing else. dust from the hay, feed, and mud from the fur will get everywhere.

it will definitely cover the top of your camera, and even your camers lens.

regards,
james

astek the dust is wet and heavy and barns are cleaned with pressure washers..they make a camera case for this application and it can be hose off with every thing else..I believe tom asnwered your question..laszlo I believe there is allot of mathane as the cows business end is busy..
